Deep Dark is a rare cave biome that spawns deep underground in the Overworld, typically forming beneath regions with low erosion values — most commonly under large mountain ranges. It resides almost entirely within the deepslate layer, though it can push upward into the stone layer when especially tall terrain rises above.

The environment of the Deep Dark is dominated by wide stretches of sculk blocks edged with sculk veins, dotted with sculk sensors, sculk shriekers, and sculk catalysts. Natural light is nearly absent — glow lichen is extremely rare here, leaving mostly sculk catalysts and occasional lava to provide any illumination. Standard hostile mob spawning does not occur in the Deep Dark, but the Warden can be summoned if sculk shriekers are triggered too frequently, and monster rooms within the biome can still spawn mobs independently.

Deep Dark is the only Overworld biome where ancient cities are found, giving it significant appeal for players seeking rare loot. Strongholds and amethyst geodes also generate here, while mineshafts and trial chambers do not — though they may intrude from neighboring biomes. Lava lakes are absent from Deep Dark.

Because sculk cannot replace ore blocks during terrain generation, ores beneath sculk patches are frequently exposed rather than buried. If a Deep Dark were somehow to reach the surface, it would visually resemble a plains biome, complete with grass and sculk patches spread across open terrain.
